    beneath the surface and the parallel growth of the town above the surface Technological processes historical events life stories and destinies are exhibited here with the help of original objects replicas and copies mine drawings maps outlines drawings models and numerous photographs The museum exhibition takes up the majority of the first and part of the second floor of the castle and is displayed in 26 exhibition rooms covering a total area of more than 1 300 sq m The exhibition is divided into the following sections Milestones of Five Centuries Collection of Rocks Fossils Mercury Ores and Minerals Documents Tell the Story View of the Town Mercury Tower Famous Personalities Mercury and Cinnabar Extraction Forestry and Timber Transport Witnesses of Life s Beat Historical Photos of Janko Trošt The permanent exhibition was completed in 2003 with a section entitled Milestones of the 20th Century presenting the period of the Italian occupation Italianisation and fascist pressures on the population the German occupation the bombardment of Idrija in the spring of 1945 the functioning of the Pavla Partisan Hospital the Slovenia Printing Shop and partisan units in the Idrija region The exhibition also displays the reconstruction of the town and the development of the new authorities after World War II the peak and end of operation of the former second largest mercury mine in the world and the restructuring of rural areas The exhibition is divided into the following segments The Idrija Region Period of the Italian and German Occupation Resistance against the Occupying Forces Life in Idrija International Dimensions Rural Frescoes On the second floor of the castle is also the Memorial Room of Slovene writer France Bevk and the new permanent exhibition Tracing Mercury Idrija Almadén Idrija is the oldest lacemaking center in Slovenia having preserved this domestic craft for more than three hundred years The first written mention of Idrija lace goes back to the year 1696 Idrija lace is a type of hand made bobbin lace that has developed in this area over the centuries In 2008 a new exhibition on Idrija lace was set up in the museum entitled Idrija Lace A History Written in Thread The exhibition is set up in three rooms and divided into eight thematic groups which acquaint visitors with the key characteristics and activities defining Idrija lace Room 1 Bobbin Lace in Europe Development of Idrija Lace Room 2 Lace Trading Lacemakers Room 3 Lacemaking School Lace and Society Idrija Lace Festival and Treasure Chest of Lace A selection of interesting specimens presented at the exhibition copies of unpublished documents and photos of lace pieces found in archives Jovanka s tablecloth a protocolary table cover for 12 persons and one of the largest preserved bobbin lace articles from the 1970 s a gift to the spouse of the then reigning President Tito evening creations adorned with lace made by recognised Slovenian fashion designers the shortest lacemaking course 5 minute demonstration of the basics of lacemaking presented in a video film presentation

    region With its collections exhibitions and other activities the Museum is enabling visitors to recognize the cultural identity of the Cerkno region By continuously developing and broadening its activities the museum is significantly co creating the cultural happenings in this area The Cerkno Museum is housed in the building of the former courthouse which was built just before the First World War During the Italian occupation it functioned as the seat of members of the financial guard and carabineers After the Second World War the building was occupied by the lower secondary school and afterwards by the elementary school The museum department was established in 1978 as the National Liberation NOB Department of the Idrija Municipal Museum After its renovation in the period from 1998 1999 it was renamed the Cerkno Museum The Museum prepares occasional exhibitions lectures and presentations independently or in cooperation with other organisers It also organises museum workshops for children and plans and conducts various programmes for visitors of the Museum the Franja Partisan Hospital and France Bevk s homestead in Zakojca Two permanent exhibitions are on display in the Museum The Cerkno Region through the Centuries Pust is to Blame A Story about the Laufarji from Cerkno Present day museum building in its original appearance around 1930 Cerkno in the 1920 s Cerkno today Mill in Laharn Hayrack in the vicinity of Cerkno Homestead in Trščovje Dolenji Novaki 1971 Visitors to the exhibition Lace on a Mesh Ground 2009 Detail from the permanent exhibition The Cerkno Region through the Centuries Children creating at a carnival workshop 2011 The Cerkno Museum is engaged in the study of local history This is also the theme of The Cerkno Region through the Centuries exhibition Special attention is devoted to the Cerkno laufarji carnival masks displayed at the exhibition

    besides Slovenes also members of former Yugoslav nations and the nations of the Soviet Union Italians Poles Frenchmen two Austrians and two Americans After the war the Franja Partisan Hospital became a symbol of the partisan movement and its extensive and extremely well organised medical activities Following the disastrous flood that destroyed the hospital in September 2007 the monument has been reconstructed almost in its entirety Based on previously prepared drawings and documents the cabins and auxiliary facilities were reconstructed copies of objects were made and substitute objects were acquired In restoring the facility we were guided by the desire to preserve to the fullest extent possible the message conveyed by the monument and its symbolic value The Franja Partisan Hospital is a cultural monument of national importance is entered in UNESCO s Tentative List of World Heritage Due to its symbolic value and its role in the european history and culture Partisan hospital Franja again recieved the European heritage label in the year 2015 Franja is an unique example of providing healthcare in special conditions and also a symbol of humanity solidarity and comradeship among local people hospital staff members and wounded soldiers who fought against fasciscm nad nazism in World war II The European heritage label project was at the intergovernmental level initiated by a few european countries in April 2006 Initiative was later transformed into formal measure of European Union European heritage label s main concern is the symbolic meaning of individual monument zones Because of their special role in the european history and culture and also in the making of European union these monument zones represent landmarks of developement of modern Europe The main purpose of the European heritage label is to promote these monument zones to enable access to general public especially the young and to provide quality information with the use of education and culture programmes that stress their european dimensions The aim of measure is to strengthen the respect of national and regional differences and intercultural dialogue and also the sense of belonging to European Union among the european citizens especially the young This sense is based on common values history and cultural heritage Here you can view presentation clips of all of the monument zones that recieved the European heritage label Cabin for the Wounded Detail from the kitchen Kitchen Washroom and Invalid Care Facility Room for the Wounded and Dining Room X ray Cabin Surgery Cabin and Isolation Cabin In front of the Dining Room Electric Plant Cabin for Hospital Staff Washroom and Invalid Care Facility The Franja Partisan Hospital received the European Heritage Label in 2007 Logo European heritage label 2015 The Franja Partisan Hospital is a reconstructed monument of immovable cultural heritage dating from the Second World War and at the same time a symbol of the struggle humanity and heroism of Slovenes who together with other freethinking nations rose against fascism and nazism Location Dolenji Novaki pri Cerknem 5282 Cerkno Opening hours from 1st of april to 30th
